Tommy Crabb Scholarship Fund
As part of its mandate to support educational endeavors related to forestry, the Hawai`i Forest Institute has embarked on the creation of the Tommy Crabb Scholarship Fund.
Tommy Crabb was born and raised in Hilo and was a life long sugar planter, agriculturist, tree farmer and resident of Hawai`i Island. After a distinguished career in sugar, he headed C. Brewer's eucalyptus bioenergy research in the 1980s which became the foundation trials for the establishment of the Hamakua and Kau tree farms by Prudential Timber Investments on Kamehameha Schools lands in the mid 1990s. Tommy served on the Soil & Water Conservation Board for East Hawai`i, the Hawai`i Forest Industry Association Board and was founding director of the Hawai`i Forest Institute and served as its second president briefly before his death several years ago.
This scholarship, renewable annually for up to four years, will be awarded to a Hawai`i high school graduate to pursue a degree in forestry or a related degree program that includes a forestry certificate or specialization at any accredited two-year or four-year college or university. The award is based on merit. Annual renewal of the scholarship is contingent upon demonstration of reasonable progress towards a forestry degree, certificate, or specialization.
